12/23/2003 - Deadly Earthquake - A magnitude 6.6 earthquake on December 26, 2003, near Bam, Iran, killed 30,000 and damaged or destroyed 85 percent of the buildings in the area.


09/11/2001 - Terrorist Attacks on America

Official and unofficial lists of the dead have converged for months around 3,000 dead, but even New York City agencies do not agree on the toll there. The police department lists 2,823 missing and dead, while the medical examiner's office trimmed that by four to 2,819 when it released a list of names this week to be read at anniversary ceremonies.

Comparable media tallies range from 2,786 to 2,814.

The toll of the other attacks is undisputed: 224, not counting hijackers. That includes 184 at the Pentagon and 40 in Pennsylvania.

The most destructive United States hurricane of record started modestly as a tropical wave that emerged from the west coast of Africa on August 14. Andrew produced a 17 ft storm surge near the landfall point in Florida, while storm tides of at least 8 ft inundated portions of the Louisiana coast. Andrew also produced a killer tornado in southeastern Louisiana.

1974 - Tornado Outbreak

The April 3-4, 1974 Super Outbreak was the largest known outbreak, with 148 tornadoes in 11 states, killing 315 people, injuring more than 5,300 and causing $600 million in damages. Alabama, Kentucky and Ohio were the states hardest hit. Perhaps the most notable tornado of the outbreak was one which touched down southwest of Xenia, Ohio. The violent tornado destroyed half the town, killing 34 and causing property damages of more than $100 million.
