Famines
A famine is an acute
episode of extreme hunger that
results in excess mortality due to
starvation or hunger-induced
diseases.

Famine has
been declared in parts of
South Sudan and the food
security situation is of
grave concern in 6 other
countries: Ethiopia, Kenya,
Nigeria, Somalia, Uganda, and
Yemen. Very high levels of
severe acute malnutrition
have been reported in the the
most affected countries.

815 million people were
hungry worldwide. Most of
these individuals live in
Asia and Africa.

North Korea is experiences a
sever famine as families are
eating grass, weeds and bark;
orphans whose growth has been
stunted by hunger and
diarrhea; people going bald
for lack of nutrition.
Starving North Koreans are
turning to cannibalism and
the government has started
executing villagers selling
human flesh, according to a
North Korean deserter quoted
in Hong Kong's South China
Morning Post, October 1,
1997.
As the drought worsens in
Haiti hundreds of thousands
of people go hungry. People
are so hungry they are
reportedly eating cattle that
have died in the fields.
Great Britain has experienced
the worst drought in 200
years! In the 25 months from
April 1995, rainfall in Great
Britain has fallen to the
lowest level since accurate
records began in the 1850's.
